Why Are My Pets Shedding So Much Right Now?

Seasonal Shedding or a Sign of a Health Problem?
Many pet owners have recently noticed that their dogs and cats are shedding more than usual. Fur on the floor, on the couch, or even stuck to your clothes might have you wondering, "Is this just seasonal shedding, or a sign of something more serious?"

What Is Seasonal Shedding?
Long-haired pets like dogs and cats naturally go through a process called shedding, especially during seasonal changes, such as :

- From summer to winter : Pets shed their lighter coat to make room for thicker fur that keeps them warm.
- From winter to summer : The thick winter coat falls out to help them stay cool in warmer weather.

In Thailand, even though we don’t have sharply defined seasons like in temperate countries, the changes in temperature and sunlight hours are still enough to trigger natural shedding.

How Much Shedding Is Normal?
Seasonal shedding typically results in slightly more hair loss than usual, but it shouldn’t be so excessive that you see bald patches or exposed skin. Here are a few signs that might indicate abnormal shedding :

- Fur falling out in patches or all over the body
- Redness, dry or itchy skin, scabs, or wounds
- Caused by unsuitable diet, allergies, fungal infections, fleas/ticks, or hormonal issues
- May also be a sign of underlying skin disease or internal health problems that require treatment

Common Causes of Abnormal Shedding
If your pet is shedding excessively or showing other symptoms, it’s a good idea to visit a veterinarian. Potential causes include :

- Allergies (food, chemicals, parasites like fleas and ticks)
- Fungal or bacterial infections
- Hormonal imbalances (e.g., thyroid disorders)
- Nutritional deficiencies (e.g., lack of omega-3, vitamin B, or protein)

How to Take Care of Your Pet During Shedding Season
- Regular brushing : Helps remove loose fur and prevent it from accumulating in your home
- Gentle shampoo baths : Soothes the skin and maintains coat health
- Nutrient-rich diet : Include Omega-3, Zinc, and Biotin to support coat and skin
- Check for fleas and ticks : A leading cause of skin irritation and fur loss
- Visit a vet if you notice anything unusual : Especially if shedding is in patches, there are visible wounds, or constant scratching

Healthy Coat, Happy Pet
Seasonal shedding is a natural part of a dog or cat's life, but if you notice signs of abnormal hair loss, don't ignore them. Proper diagnosis and care can prevent more serious health issues down the line.
