IDEAL WEIGHT should be determined according to weight and BCS of the individual. The recommended daily intake is based on the pet's ideal weight. The starting ration may need to be adjusted during follow up visits. An objective of losing 1-3% bodyweight per week is generally achievable over the first 3 months, and of 0.5-2% afterwards.Maintenance Ration: Energy requirements to maintain stable body weight after weight loss are lower than those of dogs that have never been obese. It is recommended to continue feeding the weight loss diet once ideal or target weight has been achieved. To maintain ideal weight, gradually increase the daily food intake until weight has stabilised. Maintenance rations may need to be adjusted based on the individual. If the dog regains more than 5% of body weight, the ration should be decreased to weight loss rations. It is recommended to use a digital food scales for measuring daily food allowance and divide the daily food intake into a minimum of 2 meals.NOTE: maintenance rations may need to be adjusted based on individual evolution.German AJ & al. Low-maintenance energy requirements of obese dogs after weight loss. British Journal of Nutrition (2011), 106, S93–S96.
